  1. Yes, I can verify that cancer cells do metabolize sugar differently. I used to work on liver cancer in mice and one of the early detectors of liver cancer was an increase in an enzyme that is involved in the metabolism of glucose.

Also scary, methionine, an amino acid. It is known that many types of tumors are dependent on it…it is known to be able to donate a methyl group (CH3) which is known to modifiy DNA (which can change gene expression) and also to modify some lipids in the brain that may also be involved in ADD and autism.

Methylation of DNA has been linked to many diseases, not just cancer. Part of the problem is that we live “too long”…we are susceptible to so many more things than our ancestors who were lucky to live to 40 and often died of infectious diseases…ah, the beauty of biology!

  2. 88 lb squat cleans (+12 lbs over April)
No band for dips (used tiny band in April)
    13:26 (15:06 in April) — PR by 1:40

    • nice work with your progress Mike.

  3. Mike, way to go on all the PRs! great to see you this morning!

    75 lb cleans
    green band dips
only got through the 21 and 15 rounds, and tweaked my calf and catching the clean in the squat position was agony. hopefully i will be in prime fighting shape tomorrow

  4. nice work mike! you’ve made great progress.

last time i did this workout i decided to omit the squat part of the cleans. i did it correctly this time with 65 lbs/tiny. 9:10

thanks mac for the “touch and go” coaching. it really helped me through the cleans. also for reminding me to recruit the shrug and catch the weight lower. this move and thrusters are the toughest for me-thanks for your help!

  5. I did this one with the same weight and band as in April – 55# and blue band for dips. Time was 14:02, which is a 6 minute PR. I am hesitant to claim that PR since 55# is light for the cleans, even though it seems plenty for the squat part. Either way, it was still hard work.

I do not like getting up so early, but I do like getting the gym part of the day done. Gonna try to stick to the MW mornings routine.

  6. On the road again…

    3 rounds for time -
    50 Double Unders
    10 HSPUs
    20 Dumbbell swings (50#)
    100 ft lunges

    14:35

Always feel a bit slower working out at the hotel without Damon and Laura yelling at me.

    • GO LA MAR GO! Faster! Move it! ;)

      haha!

      • Maybe I need to record the two of you and just play it over and over again on my ipod ;)

    • That seems like a pretty killer time for that though! I dont know how ya’ll do all these hotel workouts…

      • Nice LaMar! Don’t ya just love trying to fit real workouts (like those involving 100 lunges) into whatever little exercise-cave the hotel have? ;-)

        • err…hotel “has” :)

  7. Weight felt heavy; cleans were much more labored than usual.

    As Rx’d
    95# full squat cleans
7:40 PR (12 seconds faster than last time)

    • In looking at my videos:

my cleans took me almost the exact same time today as they did last time (except for the final round, where I was 9 seconds longer today).

my dips were significantly faster during the first round today (12 seconds exactly, which is the amount of my PR), but only a few seconds faster each subsequent round.

for a future PR, I will have to break the cleans less in rounds 2 and 3, and will have to minimize rest time.

      • wow…u Fast (period)

    • Ok, now that I have done this workout I can fully appreciate that you did it in 7:40. Rx. I can’t even believe that.

  8. Emily; 87# (heavy), tiny, 16:38 felt good!

  9. Ugh! I was not feeling strong tonight. I started out with 76# and quickly dropped to 66#. I did 65# yesterday so I know I should have done more today. :-(

    19:11, 66#, blue band;

  10. I think it’s important to know that progress is slow and steady on workouts like “Elizabeth.” The lift is technically difficult and heavy; the bodyweight movement is a good step above your basic pull-up or push-up. It’s hard, and it’s supposed to be!

My first rx’d “Elizabeth” that I recorded was 17:34 back in January of 2008. I have done the WOD 6 times since, shaving off a minute or so each time. It has taken me OVER A YEAR AND A HALF to take 10 minutes off my original time, but it shows that hard work pays off. If you are motivated and consistent, and choose to work on your weaknesses, you will be rewarded with progress

    • Thanks, coach. I needed that.

      • Me too…also, if you get this, can you send me my time…I accidentally wrote down Emily’s time of 16:39…I must want to emulate her so bad that I thought I was her – lol!

  11. I. Hate. Cleans. They make me scream and yell, which seems ridiculous considering I’m lifting the little training bar with 5k plates. But even that is SO HARD. Must get stronger. Grrr.

44#, red band for dips, 18:21

PR of 7#, one band, and 1:41 from last time.

    • Terri! I know what you mean. I tend to scream and yell too, but tonight I just wanted to cry. Of course I did some screaming, but I tried to keep it down.

      • Don’t keep it down! Scream out! I need some good screamin’ company.

  12. WODs like these make me scream alot, though most it was after I got home because my calf was screaming right back at me. Fortunately there is no more screaming from either of us.

My first time doing Elizabeth Rx: I think my time was 21:59. Definite room for improvement, but now I have a baseline to go from…

  13. Back in April – 110 and used tiny on dips = 19:47

today I did Rx = 19:52, so I am very happy

now I just need to work on ring dips to get faster

    • Oh thanks for everyone’s support tonight

      • You did awesome!!!

    • Good job Bryan

  14. I know I’ve done this once but I couldn’t remember the time. Tried to catch Laura, but that’s not so easy. 8:37 (RX). I’m really focusing on locking out my elbows at the top of each ring dip.

Kelly, that was an impressive job you did as we WODded head to head. You’re ALWAYS competition.

    • Damn impressive!

  15. Couldn’t find the last time I did Elizabeth, so I have no idea what I did last time.
65#, as Rx ring dips, 20:41

Felt like I took too many breaks on the cleans. Same as others said..form could be better and I think I had it in me to go faster…didn’t feel like it at the time though!

  16. I haven’t had much motivation lately and it is difficult coming to the gym for some reason. I was dreading today and Laura encouraged me to do RX. It was true that 87# and 95# both suck so I did 95#. Did a much better job on ring dips this time. Thanks Laura!!!!

As Rx’d 19:30 (first time doing Elizabeth so maybe I will work faster next time now that I made it through it)

    • SO PROUD OF YOU!!!

    • Hey Kristy, great job!! I’ve been struggling lately, so I can relate. Had a great day at the gym today, too, though! The cooler weather is helping, and I love our coaches. And our community. It’s a great gym.

  17. It was Saturday morning, I didn’t feel very good, but I felt great once I got “Elizabeth” done. I am challenged with correct form and doing the squat clean all in one motion, so I had to break each rep into a power clean followed by a squat. I used a jr. bar with training wheels, but am sure I can do more next time.

    32#; ring dips w/blue band – 16:31
