November is National Marrow Awareness Month. The National Marrow Donor Program‘s mission, from their website:

Every year, thousands of men, women and children get life-threatening diseases like leukemia and lymphoma. Many of them will die unless they get a bone marrow or cord blood transplant from a genetically matched donor. Some people find a match in their family, but 70% do not. These patients depend on the NMDP to help them find an unrelated donor or cord blood unit.

In honor of Marrow Awareness month, Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc., has provided an unrestricted grant to cover the cost of tissue-typing tests for potential donors who join online. The process of tissue-typing your sample usually costs $50, but will be available at no charge for the entire month of November. All you need to do is answer a few questions and swab your cheek, and you may just be able to save a life. Join now.

  1. oh, my quads!

  2. if your quads hurt there is not telling what mine will feel like! Watch out!

  3. Well, Fleen, I need you for this one.
    I’m about 5 days behind… Saturday?

On the note of being behind – I think I remember “you” (Laura/Damon) said to blog your work on the day you do it. Or maybe the current post?

But then, if I refer to the back-blog to compare notes/time, shouldn’t I blog on the right date so I can just click on the link?

  4. I will be there Saturday, and my lovely ‘cake will be taking a rest day, so I could use a work-out buddy. However, I made a deal with Damon, so I have to do this one today. Maybe if he checks the blog he can weigh in…I could do Lynne or whatever yesterday’s was (I don’t really want to check right now) and do this one and let you kick my a$$ (again) tomorrow. The only thing that would be better is if both you AND the ‘cake were kicking my a$$ like last time! I will be there to warm up at 9:30-ish.

I am still not feeling well, and it sounds like you have the same thing I did. I am going on 11 days now and my lungs still are not at full operating level (for me) and I am producing more mucus than a toddler community.

I never told you to blog your work. That would be like me telling you to do the Zone or actually put forth effort in your workouts…I don’t do it, so why should you. Seriously, though, I write my workouts in my schedule, so I have everything together. What I would do, if I were you, and I am not sure if it is the party line or not, I would a) blog work on the day you do it and b) go BACK to the day it was posted and blog where you blogged your work, so that if you link back you can find it, but your date will still be accurate. I don’t know, though. Maybe a coach will weigh in (instead of the room mom!).

  5. QF & Allisa,
If you all want to buddy up for this one tomorrow, that would be a great idea. Fleen, “Lynne” or any other girl of your choice would not be a bad idea for today. Have fun with it :-)

  6. Up high for the “have fun”! That’s the kind of positive attitude we like to hear!

  7. Alright! Looking forward to it. I distinctly remember getting my butt kicked by your triple-time squats…

  8. Laura, Damon- thanks for posting up about the Marrow Awareness month. Having just gone through a bone marrow transplant myself for Hodgkins Lymphoma, this is a cause near and dear to me. I was fortunate and was able to harvest, clean, freeze and use my own marrow for my transplant- but that is not the case for everyone. It is very difficult to find a marrow donor match. The best shot is a sibling, but that is only match 50% of the time. With this ever growing data base, matches are becoming more and more common. The bone marrow transplant is absolutely a life saving procedure. When I was in the clinic, I met several folks who met their donor via the National Donor network. Some of the donors were from as far away as Australia. I just hit my 100 day mark in my recovery, which is a huge milestone because it means my immune system can handle the daily challenges of being out in public again. Hope to see you guys around soon.

  9. Jeff -

We are so happy that you on well on your road to recovery. You and your family have been in our thoughts and prayers; we only wish we could do more to help. Knowing the CrossFit community, support will continue to rally for both you and the causes that need attention.

We wish you the best and look forward to seeing you back in the game. Take care :)

  10. Must get over this cold. Will take today as an extra rest day; hopefully this will allow me to come back at 100% for the next cycle…

  11. Hey. My brother had found a match through the registry as I was not a match. Turns out he matched a 19 year old, female college student somewhere in Europe. Had a common virus not gotten him when he was down, the bone marrow would have save his life completely! I’d encourage everyone to get on board!
